Food Safety Standardization

The Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC), the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA), the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors (CCGD) and the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG) as stakeholders in the Canadian fresh fruit and vegetable industry, have agreed that food safety should be a non-competitive matter.

A credible Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) based national food safety program was adopted and recognizes the food safety programs of all stakeholders and will promote food safety equally between domestic fresh and imported fresh fruits and vegetables.

The joint partners established a project to evaluate and assess the Canadian fresh produce food safety programs with those available in countries from which Canada imports. The resulting study and report is available to the public and provides a solid base for promoting standardized food safety programming for domestic and imported fresh fruits and vegetables. Standardized food safety programs will ultimately reinforce practices that contribute to the production, processing, transportation, selling and cooking of safe food within Canada.
